Multiplicity free Hamiltonian manifolds are certain symplectic manifolds equipped with an action of a compact Lie group. They are closely related to completely integrable systems. Through elementary examples, I will explain how representation theory, using toric and spherical varieties from algebraic geometry, makes it possible to classify such manifolds.
